She treats excess, flaws, decoration, and awkward gestures as serious material, questioning her own habits around what “works” and discarding binaries of good and bad, finished and unfinished, beautiful and ugly. Kelda holds a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute, an MFA from the Pacific Northwest College of Art, and an MAT from Lewis &amp; Clark College. She is a member of Well Well Projects in Portland, Oregon, and has received multiple grants from the Regional Arts and Culture Council. Van Patten's process involves cut-out photographs taken during her residencies in landscapes like Jentel in the Northern plains of Wyoming and the Kala Institute in the San Francisco Bay Area. In addition to photography, she incorporates collage and drawing to craft re-photographed compositions that subtly challenge perceptions of reality and artifice. Much of her work predates the digital age, executed in front of a medium-format camera. In the final phase, she collaborates with artificial intelligence, introducing elements like pollinators and protectors. This project was inspired by the historical fascination with ferns, known as pteridomania, which swept through the Victorian era and was especially popular among women, resulting in a craze characterized by excessive admiration of ferns (also called "vegetable jewelry"). This infatuation generated a proliferation of derivative production, creating an explosion of kitsch. Initiated during the Blue Sky/Sitka Photography Residency at the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology in October 2021, these works are a convergence of dozens of photographs capturing the Sitka Spruce-Western Hemlock forest understory blended with simulacra and kitsch. Van Patten’s process started with a handheld flash and various colored gels to photograph elements like mushrooms, banana slugs, and the ubiquitous western sword fern fronds. These images were then printed, cut, and affixed to an artificial fern, serving as an armature. Despite the longstanding tradition of cultivating nature within homes throughout history, this specific trend during quarantine shed light on how individuals turned to domestic horticulture as a coping mechanism for loss and anxiety. Informed by her expanding collection of houseplants and an online reflection of life's cultivation during a year of lockdown, Van Patten engages in a process of cutting, reassembling, and collaging her photographs. This deliberate technique blurs the lines between depth and flatness, accentuates imperfections, and transmutes plants into hyperreal objects. 2021Strange ParadisePortland, OR In Always in Flower and in Fruit, Van Patten&nbsp;captures images of items within her home, such as cut flowers and fruit, and juxtaposes these with kitsch objects sourced from eBay, such as artificial flowers and plastic fruit. Kelda interprets kitsch through its 19th-century Victorian origins, viewing it as myth or melancholic curiosities that simultaneously evoke desire and comfort while concealing denial and loss. Her photographs pay homage to 17th-century Dutch still-life paintings by prompting symbolic interpretations of Vanitas and Memento Mori, both delving into the fragility of life. The juxtaposition of domestic and kitsch elements invites viewers to reflect on the shifting layers of still life within a post-truth era.&nbsp; <img width="2800" height="1867" width_o="2800"
