Based in Portland, Oregon, she was a public art educator for more than 20 years. Her current practice embraces materiality, process, vulnerability, and the traces of making. Through play, improvisation, mess, excess, and mistakes, Van Patten explores uncertainty and not-knowing as generative conditions for discovery, change, and transformation. Kelda Van Patten received her MFA in Craft and Material Studies from Oregon College of Art and Craft/Pacific Northwest College of Art in 2020. She holds a BFA in Interdisciplinary Arts from the San Francisco Art Institute and an MAT from Lewis &amp; Clark College. She has exhibited her work at Well Well Projects in Portland, Oregon, Klompching Gallery in Brooklyn, The Vestibule in Seattle, Blue Sky Gallery in Portland, and Koslov Larsen in Houston. She has received multiple grants from the Regional Arts &amp; Culture Council and has attended residencies at Kala Art Institute in Berkeley, California; the Nes Artist Residency in Iceland; Jentel in Sheridan, Wyoming; and the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology in Otis, Oregon. Fragments of identity surface, provoke, and dissolve. Outdated magazine pages are cut, torn, and reassembled. Irreverent still lifes and performative self-portraits punctuate the exhibition: an obscured face dissolving into purple light, a worn tube of concealer, an estrogen patch, a gold heart necklace, a duct tape figure with unblinking googly eyes, and the gaze multiplied and made absurd. Kelda Van Patten finds strength in the precarious and imperfect: tape seams catch the light, folds of soft pink fabric conceal and expose, and a red pipe cleaner quietly resists a smile. Borrowing its title from a 1971 Sunset magazine advertisement, the kind of domestic imagery that shaped her childhood visual environment, Kelda Van Patten's work explores the space where "perfection" is a familiar, yet unstable, promise. Across collage, photography, animation, and objects, Kelda investigates the tension between being seen and unseen, examining how "femininity" is constructed within Western beauty systems, aging, and the labor of care. By isolating body parts, obscuring faces, and utilizing marketing artifacts, the work reveals a world of "almost recognition" where images of the "feminine" begin to glitch. In this multidisciplinary landscape, Kelda celebrates mistakes and process as strengths. Imperfection and precarity are not treated as failures, but as generative structures. What emerges is a state of continual becoming: an identity that is perpetually made and unmade, staying in motion rather than settling into a resolved, "perfect" completion. <img width="2000" IF I HAD A FLOWER FOR EVERY TIME I THINK OF YOU 2023-2024Well Well ProjectsPortland, ORIf I had a flower for every time I think of you&nbsp;investigates the theme of species loneliness, highlighting brief moments of interaction with both the living and inanimate. Van Patten's process involves cut-out photographs taken during her residencies in landscapes like Jentel in the Northern plains of Wyoming and the Kala Institute in the San Francisco Bay Area. In addition to photography, she incorporates collage and drawing to craft re-photographed compositions that subtly challenge perceptions of reality and artifice. Much of her work predates the digital age, executed in front of a medium-format camera. In the final phase, she collaborates with artificial intelligence, introducing elements like pollinators and protectors. This project was inspired by the historical fascination with ferns, known as pteridomania, which swept through the Victorian era and was especially popular among women, resulting in a craze characterized by excessive admiration of ferns (also called "vegetable jewelry"). This infatuation generated a proliferation of derivative production, creating an explosion of kitsch. Initiated during the Blue Sky/Sitka Photography Residency at the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology in October 2021, these works are a convergence of dozens of photographs capturing the Sitka Spruce-Western Hemlock forest understory blended with simulacra and kitsch. Van Patten’s process started with a handheld flash and various colored gels to photograph elements like mushrooms, banana slugs, and the ubiquitous western sword fern fronds. These images were then printed, cut, and affixed to an artificial fern, serving as an armature.
